Biographical Notes

James Lawrence Inkster was born on 6 April 1894 at Waimate, the eldest son of Laurence and Levina (Lavinia, née Tregoning) Inkster. His early education was probably at Waimate. In April 1910 he was admitted to Dunedin Technical Classes. He was 15 years 11 months old, an insurance clerk and living at North East Valley. James was a civil servant when he enlisted, naming his father as next-of-kin – Lawrence Inkster, Farm Road, Northland, Wellington. He was single and living at home. Private J. L. Inkster embarked with the New Zealand Medical Corps (No. 1 Stationary Hospital) per the “Marama” on 21 May 1915 at Wellington. He transferr to “Moldavia” for Suez. Private J. L. Inkster was one of the survivors when the Marquette was torpedoed and sunk in the Aegean Sea on 23 October 1915. James Laurence Inkster married Minnie Wyper Barr in 1922. He died on 28 December 1965 at Wellington, aged 71 years. He was cremated, his ashes interred in a soldier’s plot at Karori Cemetery. His brother, Herbert Michael Inkster, and several cousins served in World War One – Herbert Inkster (24523), Robert James Inkster and Edwin Clifford Inkster.
