Biographical Notes

James Edward Hooper, known as Edward, was born on 8 April 1896 at Temuka, the second son of James and Martha Edith (Edith, née White) Hooper. He was educated at Temuka School. He was listed at a Dunedin address in the 1916 Reserve Roll. Edward Hooper was a bricklayer for the Balclutha Freezing Works when he enlisted (simply as Edward Hooper), naming his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Edith Hooper, Princess Street, Temuka. Sapper E. Hooper embarked with the New Zealand Feld Engineers, No. 1 Field Company, of the 12th Reinforcements per the “Ulimaroa”, leaving Wellington on 1 May 1916 for Suez, Egypt. He returned to New Zealand by the “Cordoba” which was expected at Wellington on 30 August 1919. Edward Hooper married Eliza Ellen Holden in 1921. He had resumed his bricklaying after the war and from the 1930s lived at Te Awamutu. It was only on retirement that he used his full name on electoral rolls. He died on 4 February 1978 at Te Awamutu, aged 81. He and Eliza (1983) were cremated, their ashes interred at Hamilton Park Cemetery. Their son, Kenneth, served in World War Two and died at just 48 years. Edward’s will, signed 13 October 1977, was in the name of Edward Hooper but signed J. E. Hooper. He was survived by his wife, a step-son, Norman Holden, and six grandchildren.
