Biographical Notes

Patrick Anthony Courtney was born on 11 December 1897 at Timaru, the fourth and youngest son of John and Ellen (née Keane) Courtney. Patrick was educated at Fairview and Gleniti schools before going to the Timaru Marist Brothers School in 1910. He was a labourer residing at home when he enlisted, naming his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs E. Courtney, Glen-iti, Timaru. Lance Corporal P. A. Courtney embarked with the 40thy Reinforcements per the “Tahiti” on 10 July 1918, headed for Plymouth, England. He returned to New Zealand by the “Cordoba” which was expected at Wellington on 30 August 1919. Patrick married Agnes Lena Johnson in 1924; they divorced in 1936/ He married Vena Dorothea Ruth Kirby n 1936; they divorced in 1943. He then married, in 1945, Colleen Aileen Spriggens who survived him. After the war he lived in Hamilton where he was a traffic inspector and for some years in Wellington where he was a hotel manager. Patrick Anthony Courtney died pm 11 March 1954 at Wellington, aged 56 years, and was buried in Karori Cemetery. His brother James, who also served with the New Zealand Forces, was awarded the Military Cross.
