Biographical Notes

John Henderson, who was born on 6 February 1896 at Kakahu Bush, was the son of Irish-born John and Mary Henderson. John, junior, was educated at Kakahu Bush School. A labourer at Kakahu Bush when he enlisted, he named hs father, John Henderson, Kakahu Bush, Winchester, as next-of-kin. He had served with the Senior Cadets until he was transferred and was still serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regimental Territorials. Private J. Henerson embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment of the 26th Reinforcements, per the “Willochra”, departing on 9 June 1917.

Private John Henderson returned to New Zealand in 1919. He married Winifred Gladys Wilson in 1922. He died 5 October 1978 at Temuka and was buried there. Winifred died in 2001, aged 97.
