Biographical Notes

James Freeman Johnson was born on 2 June 1898 at Otaio, South Canterbury, the fourth son of John Freeman and Elizabeth Jane (née Young) Johnson. Along with his siblings, James was educated at Otaio School. James Johnson’s name was drawn in a ballot and he enlisted on 26 August 1918 at Timaru. At that date he was single and a farm labourer for his father at Otaio. H was serving in the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment. On 2 October 1918 at Timaru, James married Isabel Josephine Lyall. He did not see any overseas service.

James Freeman Johnson died on 13 November 1971, aged 73, and was buried in the Otaio Cemetery. Isabel, known as Dida, had died more than twenty years before. Their first-born son, Kenneth James Johnson, was killed on air operations in 1943. His three older brothers- John Freeman Johnson, William Thomas Johnson and George Johnson - all served in the war.
