Fred and Doris had two sons before he died on 8 July 1932 at the Christchurch Hospital. He had been riding his bicycle when he was knocked down by a motor-car on 10 May. He suffered a compound fracture of the right leg, which led to his death two months later. He was buried in Sydenham Cemetery. Doris who married again, died in 1977 and was buried with Fred. His brother John (Richard John Harris), served in World War One, and another brother, Victor Roy Harris, also enlisted but did not serve overeas. William Henry Harris was found dead in the Avon in June 1916. He was 64 years old, and had been living by himself in Christchurch, being separated from his wife who lived in Timaru.
