Biographical Notes

Thomas John Howe, born on 20 September 1896 at Oamaru, was the eldest of the six children of John and Margaret Amelia (née Cooper) Howe. When he enlisted he was living with the family at Timaru. Lance Corporal T. J. Howe embarked for Plymouth, England, on 11 October 1916 with the 18th Reinforcements per the “Tofuai”. Private Thos. J. Howe of Timaru returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. In 1921 Thomas John Howe married Annie Pearce, who was to die in 1926 at Timaru where she was buried.Two of Annie’s brothers served in World War One – David and Arthur Walter. His father died in 1927 at Dunedin, to where the family had moved. The following year Thomas married Elspeth Alice Spiers. His mother remarried in 1932 to Oliver John Keenan. Thomas John Howe died on 7 October 1970 at Dunedin and was buried in the servicemn’s section of Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin, Elspeth’s ashes were interred with him in 1999. Thomas John Howe was a nephew of Alfred, Charles and George Howe who all served in World War One, Alfred being killed in action in 1918.
