Biographical Notes

Daniel Dwane, known as Dan, was born on 15 April 1894 at Ballylanders, County Limerick, Ireland, the third son of Thomas and Mary Anne (née McGrath) Dwane. In 1901 seven-year old Dan was a scholar at home at Ballylanders with his parents, sister and five brothers. He arrived at Lyttelton, New Zealand in 1909 and in 1916, when he was listed on the Reserve Rolls, he was a ploughman at Gleniti, Timaru. He had registered for compulsory military training at Gleniti and enlisted on 10 September 1917 at Timaru, then a ploughman at Hakataramea. His next-of-kin was his mother – Mrs M. Dwane, Ballylanders, Limerick, Ireland. Also record was Mr Cameron, a friend and by whom he had been employed at Gleniti, Private J. C. Ford embarked with the 36th Reinforcements at Wellington, for Southampton, England, on 23 April 1918 by the “Willochra”. Private D. Dawne, of Timaru, was one of more than 800 men who returned to New Zealand by the “Port Hacking” in August 1919. On his return he went to Makikihi, South Canterbury. He was discharged on 17 September 1917. Daniel Dwane married Ann Maria (Annie) McDrury on 21 August 1933 at the Church of St Agnes, Halswell. For some years Dan and Annie farmed at Clandeboye, near Temuka. Selling the farm in 1960, they retired to Christchurch. Daniel Dwane died on 5 June 1983 at Nazareth House, Christchurch, and was buried at Waimairi Cemetery with Annie who had died in 1974.
