Biographical Notes

Wesley Coulbeck was born on 6 June 1896 at Waimate, a son of Jane but broght up by his grandparents, John and Charlotte (née Glover) Coulbeck, as their child. A salesman and single he gave his address as at his employer’s and named his widowed mother as his next-of-kin when he enlisted on 16 March 1917. His father had died in June 1904 and was buried at Waimate. Private Wesley Coulbeck embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment of the 28th Reinforcements for Plymouth, England, on 26 July 1917 by the “Ulimaroa”. Wesley married Florence Ruby Hadler in 1921. He died on 22 June 1972 at Christchurch and was interred in the Ruru Lawn Cemetery with Florence. His brother William John Coulbeck also served with the New Zealand Forces, and another brother, Albert Avery Coulbeck, enlisted.
