Biographical Notes

Alick Dugald Cameron, known as Alex, was born on 12 July 1891 at Waimate, the son of Scottish born Angus and Margaret (Maggie) Cameron. Alex was educated at the Waimate School, where he received an attendance prize in 1898. Both his sisters featured in Waimate School prize lists. His father died in 1903 and it was his widowed mother, Mrs Maggie Cameron, whom he named as next-of-kin when he enlisted on 26 March 1917 at Waimate. Alick had served with the Territorials, 2nd South Canterbury Regiment until he was transferred to the Reserve. In March 1917 his name was drawn in the fifth ballot. Private A. D. Cameron embarked with the 40th Reinforcements for Plymouth, England, on 10 July 1918 by the “Tahiti”. A. D. Cameron, of Waimate, was one of more than 800 men who returned to New Zealand by the “Port Hacking” in August 1919. Alick Dugald Cameron died on 17 May 1960 and was interred at the Old Waimate Cemetery. He bequeathed all his person belongings, including his property at 71 Wilkin Street, Waimate, to his sister, Mrs Robert (Maggie) Torrance, 345 Breezes Road, Aranui, Christchurch. Maggie Torrance was the only surviving sister and the sole residuary legatee of Alick Dugald Cameron, late of Waimate, retired painter. Alick did not marry. He had no brothers and his only other sister, Sarah Stewart Thomas, and his parents predeceased him. Alex’s sisters were both born in the United States of America, Sarah in about 1883 and Margaret (Maggie) in about 1886. Sarah Stuart (Cameron) Thomas died in 1941 and Maggie (Cameron) Torrance died in 1962.
