Biographical Notes

Charles Henry Batchelor was born on 4 January 1893 at Mount Grey Downs, Canterbury, the eldest son of Charles Alfred and Hannah Sophia (née Thompson) Batchelort. He was educated at Mount Grey and Sefton schools. Re-entering Mount Grey in February 1907, he left in October to work at Fernside. The family moved to Studholme in South Canterbury in 1908. Charles Henry Batchelor enlisted simply as Henry Batchelor. He was a labourer at Rosewill, Timaru, while his father, his nominated next-of-kin, was at Makikihi. Trooper H. Batchelor embarked with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles of the 9th Reinforcements, per the “Maunganui” on 8 January 1916, leaving from Wellington for Suez, Egypt. The family moved to Southland after the war. While Henry’s parents returned to South Canterbury, he remained in Southland. He married Helen Gannan Lambert in 1918. Charles Henry Batchelor died on 17 November 1968 at Invercargill, aged 75, and was buried in the Eastern Cemetery there. Two brothers also served in World War One – George William Batchelor and Peter John Batchelor; as did two cousins with South Canterbury connections – Thomas Henry (Harry) Batchelor, who was killed in action at Gallipoli in 1915, and Ernest Robert Batchelor. His youngest brother, Ivor D. R. Batchelor who saw service in World War Two, is buried at Timaru.
