Biographical Notes

James Alexander Guild was born on 18 March 1883 at Temuka, the eldest son of James and Janet Morton (née Storry) Guild. Along with his siblings he was educated at Milford School near Temuka. His father died in August 1914, right on the outbreak of war. Mr James Guild, senior, who had come out from Scotland in 1859, was well-known in the district as the farmer of “Trevenna”, Temuka. Lieutenant J. A. Guild embarked for Suez, Egypt, with the New Zealand Field Artillery, No 4 Howitzer Battery, on 6 May 1916. In 1920 he married Caroline Mitchell, whose sister Emily was later to marry his brother, Malcolm Guild. James died at Temuka on 6 June 1965, aged 82, and was buried at Temuka, his wife Caroline with him. Malcolm Guild also served in World War One.
