Biographical Notes

Walter William Tindale was born on 15 May 1892 at Ulmarra, New South Wales, Australia, the son – and maybe the only child - of Thomas Walter and Margaret (née Finlayson) Tindale. His birth was registered as William W. Tindale. His father died in 1892 and his mother in 1895. As of 1913 William was at Timaru, appearing in court in October of that year. The Defence Officers of South Canterbury, “after having given every latitude,” were showing unmistakably that they meant to “make Territorials adhere to the Defence Act.” Forty-two Territorials and cadets were charged with failing to render personal service under the Act. Walter Wm Tindale was fined 40 shillings and costs. In April 1914, again at Timaru, he faced a similar charge. Charges were heard against several Senior Cadets and Territorials of having failed to attend parade, W. W. Tindale being fined 40 shilling and costs. W. W. Tindale attested on 17 August 1914 at Masterton, declaring that he had served with A Company of the South Canterbury Regiment and that he was still serving having not been transferred. He was a labourer at Takapu, and named his aunt as next-of-kin – Ann Finlayson, Clarence River, New South Wales. He returned to New Zealand in July 1915, having suffered a gunshot wound to the left knee and thigh, from which he suffered permanent disability. Walter married Eunice Bailey in 1915. Their son, William Allan Tindale, served in World War Two. Walter died on 26 June 1956, aged 64, and was buried in the services section of Kelvin Grove Cemetery. Eunice died in 1977 and her ashes were interred there.
