Biographical Notes

William McIntyre was born on 8 November 1886 at Pleasant Point and baptised there, the eldest son of John and Letitia (née Cochrane) McIntyre. Along with his brothers and sisters, William was educated at Pleasant Point School. On 17 August 1914 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, William attested for service with the Australian Imperial Forces. He was a tramway employee, single and of Church of England affiliation. He had served one year with the Cadets, being discharged at his own request, He named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs L. McIntyre, Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, New Zealand. His father had died in 1905. William McIntyre, 112, embarked with the 6th Battalion, A Company on 19 October 1914 at Melbourne, per the “Hororata”. He was deemed fit for active service, but it appears that Private McIntyre saw no service as he was not eligible for war medals. What became of William? Did he return to New Zealand? A younger brother, Albert McIntyre, served with the New ZealandForces.
