Biographical Notes

Albert McIntyre was born on 22 March 1896 at Pleasant Point and baptised there, the fourth son of John and Letitia (née Cochrane) McIntyre. Along with his brothers and sisters, Albert was educated at Pleasant Point School. His name was recorded on the 1916 Reserves Roll. When he enlisted, after being called up, he was a farm hand at Pleasant Point for his mother, his father having died in 1905. Corporal A. McIntyre embarked with the 28th Reinforcements on 26 July 1917, headed for Plymouth, England, per the “Ulimaroa”. Sergeant-Major A. McIntyre returned to New Zealand by the “Marama” which was due on 17 July 1919. Albert married Dorothy Mabel Thew in 1920. He died on 18 January 1962 at Hokitika and was buried in the local cemetery. His oldest brother, William McIntyre, served with the Australian Forces.
