Biographical Notes

Richard David Pascoe was born on 2 November 1895 (or 28 October as in school admissions and on enlistment) at Waimate, one of the family of sixteen of John and Caroline Wilhelmina (Carrie, née Luck) Pascoe. The first-born Richard David Pascoe diedat the age of six months and was buried at Waimate. Richard was educated at Hannaton and Willowbridge schools in South Canterbury. In July 1907 John Pascoe sold his farm and had a clearing sale at Studholme. The family moved to the North Island, Richard going to Hamilton East, Te Rapa and Hamilton West schools, leaving Hamilton West at the age of fourteen for hospital. Richard David Pascoe enlisted on 18 October 1915 at Trentham, just before his 20th birthday. He had served in the 11thy Frankton Rifles until they were disbanded. Working as a mill hand and living at Mananui, he named his father as next-of-kin – John Pascoe, Massey Street, Frankton Junction. But Richard’s teeth were very defective and had to be attended to. He attested afain on 10 September 1917. Richard married Caroline Murdoch Coulston in 1921. But by 1926 Richard had been arrested for arrears due on a maintenance order to support his wife and children. Caroline married again in 1931. Richard’s older brother, Charles Henry Pascoe, was killed in action on 1 August 1916 at the Somme. His younger brother, Thomas Pascoe, served in both world wars.
