James Hugh Murphy enlisted as James Murphy. He was born on 15 March 1895 at Fairlie, the older son of Denis and Margaret (née Fitzsimmons) Murphy, and baptized Roman Catholic on 1 April 1895 at Timaru. He, his brother and three older sisters were educated at Fairlie School. His father died in December 1920, his mother died in 1953 at the age of ninety. His oldest twin sister, Hannah, died in 1918 at the Timaru Hospital. J. Murphy, 10372, of Fairlie, returned to New Zealand from Egypt, in a draft of 1095, per the “Ulimaroa”, which was due at Auckland on 6 August 1919. He married Margaret Elizabeth Ryan in 1921. His younger brother, Denis Eugene Murphy, known as Eugene, also served in World War One. James died on 1 October 1979 at Christchurch, aged 84 years, just nine days after his wife. They were survived by a daughter and a son, and six grandchildren.
