Biographical Notes

Charles Hiorns was born on 22 September 1884 at Waimate, the fifth son of John and Emma (née Allen) Hirons, who had married in 1867 in England. John and Emma came to New Zealand by the “Peeress” in 1874 and settled at Waimate. Emma Hiorns who died in 1914 and John who died in 1918, were buried at Waimate. Charles Hiorns named his sister as next-of-kin – Mrs Ellen Arlidge [Arbidge, sic], Parsonage Road, Waimate. Charles was a farmer, residing at Mosgiel. Private Hiorns embarked with the 28th Reinforcements for England on 24 July 1917. He returned to New Zealand in March 1918. The South Canterbury men came from Lyttelton by special train expected mid afternoon on the 19th March. Charles married Lena Annie Steer in 1921. Charles and Lena had four daughters, the youngest born after Charles died. Little Nellie Hazel Hiorns died at the age of one in 1928 and was buried with her father. Charles Hiorns died on 5 August 1926 at Hastings, aged 41 years, and was buried in Hastings Cemetery. Lena Annie Hiorns, a widow previously of Hastings, died in 1952 at Dunedin, where her eldest daughter lived, and was buried at Andersons Bay Cemetery.
