Biographical Notes

Charles Arthur Henriksen was born on 20 November 1896 at Balfour, the son of Hans Peter Henriksen, from Denmark, and his second wife, Rachel Catherine (née Ramsay) Henriksen. The first Charles Arthur, born to Hans’ first wife, Mary, died in infancy, he and his mother being buried at Lumsden. Charles was educated at Balfour School, leaving at the age of fifteen. He was a joiner, living at Invercargill, when he enlisted for service. His nominated next-of-kin, his mother, Mrs H. P. Henriksen, was initially at Balfour and then moved to Gleniti, Timaru. C. A. Henriksen returned to Gleniti per the ‘Awarua’ which was due at Auckland about 19 November 1919. In 1920 he married Ethel Elizabeth Neas, a teacher. Post-war Charles farmed in the Pleasant Point area. His name was drawn in the World War Two Ballot in 1942 when he was living at Pleasant Point. Charles Arthur Henriksen, of 9 Grasmere Street, Timaru, died on 19 May 1982 at Timaru and was buried in the Timaru Cemetery, with a services plaque. He left an estate not only in New Zealand but also in England; Ethel had died more than twenty years earlier.
