Biographical Notes

William Roberts was the eldest son of John and Ellen (née Green) Roberts of Paynestown, Waimate. He was born on 4 June 1877 at Waimate. Private William Roberts nominated his mother as next-of-kin and embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade on 26 April 1917. W. Roberts, 47083, of Waimate, arrived home in January 1919 by Return Draft 204. His youngest brother Donald also served, as Daniel Roberts, in World War I.
