Biographical Notes

Robert Ernest Davis was born on 25 May 1895 at Kurow, the youngest son of Thomas and Mary (née Beveridge) Davis. He was educated initially at Kurow School, moving to Union Street School in Dunedin, after his father’s death. In 1909 he entered Oamaru North School, under the guardianship of his oldest brother. His mother had died in 1906. From Oamaru North, Robert went on to High School in Dunedin. Robert Ernest Davis was a stable boy at Bluecliffs, St Andrews, when his name was drawn in the Military Service Ballot late in 1916. On enlisting he was a groom at Riccarton, and named his sister Agnes as next-of-kin. By the 1919 electoral roll, Tobert Davis was recorded as a jockey at Temuka. This was Robert Davis who had lost his left leg In the war.
