Biographical Notes

George Stanbury Ayling, known as Stanbury, was born on 21 November 1893 at Dunedin (as recorded in his personnel file), the son of George Thomas and Annie Edith (née Stanbury) Ayling. Stanbury was educated at Temuka School and, after time at a private school, at Christchurch East School. George Stanbury Ayling was a motor mechanic, residing at Geraldine with his mother, when he attested. George Thomas and Annie Edith may have gone their separate ways when Stanbury and his sister Dorothy were still young. Stanbury married Martha Louisa Johns in 1920 in England. Both were cremated at Salisbury Park, Timaru.
