Biographical Notes

John Arnold was born on 23 March 1884 at Waimate, the second surviving son of Epenetus John and Jane (née Jeffery) Arnold. Epenetus and Jane came to New Zealand in 1874, their first-born dying on the ship. They must have gone directly to Waimate, as their son Henry was born there in September 1874. By 1886 the family had moved to Lawrence where John was educated at the local school, leaving for work at the age of thirteen. John Arnold was a gardener for Mrs Grant of Elloughton Grange, Timaru, and was residing in Selwyn Street, Timaru, when he attested. He had married Elsie May Toneycliffe on 25 December 1915 at Timaru, and their daughter, Elsie May, was born on 28 May 1917 at 51 Selwyn Street, Timaru.
