Biographical Notes

George Winskill was born on 16 October 1894 at Amberley, the eldest son of George and Mary (née Blain) Winskill. He was educated at the local Amberley School. George was a clerk for New Zealand Railways at Timaru when he enlisted. He nominated his father as next-of-kin. Just 20 years old, he embarked on 14 December 1914. In August 1915 Private George Winskill was wounded at the Dardanelles. Sergeant George Winskill had been at the Front for over three years when he was killed in action at the Somme by a sniper. He was initially buried in an isolated trench near colincamps and later interred in the Euston Road Cemetery.
