Biographical Notes

John Robert Tilley, born on 14 November 1891 at Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales, was the first born of Frederick and Sarah Ann (Annie) (née Abrahams) Tilley. In 1901 John was at home with his family. By 1911 Only his mother, the two youngest children and an illegitimate daughter were in the family home. It appears that John and his brothers James and Alfred had left the country. J. R. Tilley passed the medical examination at Timaru in September 1915 and was sworn in for service at the Front. He was a farm hand at Albury when he enlisted. His brothers, James Thomas Tilley and Alfred Tilley, both served with the Canadian forces in World War I, and, like John, named their mother as next-of-kin. James returned to Wales, while Alfred remained in Canada.
