Biographical Notes

Donald Macleod was born on 17 February 1891 at Glenelg, Inverness-shire, Scotland (as recorded in his personnel file). He had served two years with the Imperial Yeomanry before emigrating. He was part of South Canterbury’s quota for the Ninth Reinforcements which left South Canterbury for Trentham on 18 October 1915. Donald was a farm labourer at Albury when he enlisted. He nominated his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs McLeod, Glenelg, Inverness-shire, Scotland. Donald (Donald Matheson Macleod) may well have been the son of John and Mary (née Matheson) McLeod, born about 1887 at Glenelg, and living at home with his parents at Glenelg in 1891 and with his mother and siblings in 1901. He married Flora Grace French in 1920; he and Flora had two daughters and one son. Flora died in 1945 at Waitati where they lived. His older brother, Angus Macleod, served with the British forces in World War I. Donald died in 1952, his age recorded as 63 years, suggesting a birth year of 1888/1889.
