Biographical Notes

Angus Alexander McLeod was the eldest son of Murdo (Murdoch) and Abigail (Euphemia? née Gillanders) McLeod, both of whom hailed from Ross-shire, Scotland. Angus was born on 1 May 1888 at Christchurch. His father managed Double Hill Station at Methven for many years before purchasing a farm at Gapes Valley, near Geraldine. It was at Gaeps Valley that Angus received his early education, transferring to Geraldine in September 1897, when his father sold up at Gapes Valley. Angus did well at Gapes Valley School, receiving a prize in the Preparatory Class in February 1896 and one for Standard I in April 1897. The 1897 annual traet and distribution of prizes was one of the enjoyable and successful ever held. It was mentioned that the schoolwork compared very favourably with that of much larger schools and great credit was due to the sole teacher.
