Biographical Notes

Joseph Thomas Grimsey was born on 24 October 1882 at Geraldine, the second son of Edward and Fanny Ellis (née Strange) Grimsey. His mother died in 1884 at the birth of her son, John Watson Grimsey. She was 34 years old, and her infant son died at 17 days. Joseph and his siblings were educated at South Orari School, where Joseph was first in the Standards II and III boys’ race in 1891. Draft 211 - the troopship “Briton” - with over a thousand men aboard including Private T. Grimsey, of Orari, was due at Lyttelton in late January 1919. Grimsey was returning home invalided. Private Grimsey and three comrades were welcomed home at Orari by the Patriotic Society in February 1919. On behalf of his comrades and himself, Private Grimsey thanked those present for their kind welcome. Joseph married Winifred Amory George in 1920 at St Matthew’s Church, Hastings. Joseph and Winifred lived at Lowcliffe, Mid Canterbury, until his early death. He died on 2 March 1922 at Ashburton Hospital, following an operation to amputate his arm. Joseph Thomas Grimsey was accorded a military funeral at the Ashburton Cemetery. Edward Grimsey died in 1934, survived by his son Edward and two unmarried daughters. Joseph’s older brother, Edward James Grimsey, served in the South African War.
