Biographical Notes

Hugh Miller Macfarlane was born on 28 November 1885 in North Canterbury, the son of john Donald and Margaret Hart (née Gibson) Macfarlane. He married Prudence Giles on 8 May 1917 at St Mary’s Church, Timaru. Their daughter, Emma Prudence, was born on 22 April 1918 at Timaru, six months after Hugh, a sheep farmer at Parnassus, had embarked for the Front. Private H. H. Macfarlane returned home in Draft 210, which brought seventy invalided soldiers for Canterbury and the West Coast, due to reach New Zealand in late January 1919. After the war Hugh returned to sheep farming, living in different parts of South Canterbury, including “Waikora”, Waihaorunga, and “Ruataniwha”, Lake Tekapo. His brother, Walter Angus Macfarlane, also served in World War I.
