Biographical Notes

Lewis Edwin Fletcher was born on 19 Janury 1877 at Lyveden, Northamptonshire, England, the youngest son of William, a farmer, and Ann (née Hunt) Fletcher. He was at home with his family at Benfield in 1881, a scholar at Little Oakley in 1891, and a farmer at Marston Trussell, Northamptonshire, with his widowed mother in 1901. William Fletcher died in 1897 and Ann in 1901. By 1911 Lewis was a farmer at Te Moana near Geraldine, South Canterbury. A few years later he was a brewer at Washdyke. When he enlisted he gave his occupation as farmer and his address as Washdyke. Lewis nominated his oldest brother as next-of-kin – Edward Fletcher, Barnack, Stamford, England. He also named a friend – Fred King, Washdyke, Timaru. While overseas he married Mabel Helen Tyler, on 17 September 1918 at the Parish Church, Preston, Rutland, England. She then became his next-of-kin, and probably came with Lewis on his return to New Zealand. L. E. Fletcher returned home in Draft 211, with over a thousand men aboard, per the “Briton” which was due at Lyttelton in late January 1919. Soon after their return, Lewis and Mabel settled in the Thames area.
