Biographical Notes

Thomas Chapman Warne was born on 17 August 1881 (not 1888 as recorded in his personnel file) at Pleasant Point, the youngest in the family of William and Isabella (née Chapman) Warne. Both William and Isabella were early settlers at Timaru, Isabella arriving in January 1859 on the “Strathallan”. Theirs was the second marriage registered at Timaru. Thomas was educated for the most part at Pleasant Point School, with time at Hazelburn School. He embarked on 24 July 1917. Draft 211 - the troopship “Briton” - with over a thousand men aboard including Private T. C. Warne, of Geraldine, was due at Lyttelton in late January 1919. Thomas married Jessie Haywood in 1920.
