Biographical Notes

Bob Sherburd Robertson was the first-born of William Alexander and Sarah Jane (née Sherburd) Robertson. He started his schooling at Momona School near Dunedin, spent three months at Kakanui School in 1909, before transferring to Fairlie, from where he went to Timaru Boys’ High School. Having enlisted on 10 October 1917, ten days before his twentieth birthday, Private B. S. Robertson embarked with the 33rd Reinforcements on 31 December 1917. The hospital report issued in December 1918, listed B. S. Robertson of Fairlie, but his was not a severe case. Bob returned to New Zealand per the hospital ship “Marama”, embarking at Southampton on 19 December 1918. He married Edith Gertrude Dines, of Fairlie, in 1922. Bob Sherburd Robertson served in the Home Guard in the Mackenzie District in World War II. He died on 9 November 1995, at the grand age of 98. Two brothers lost their lives in World War II – the youngest, Evan Bertram Te Makahi Roberston, in 1941 in Belgium, and Alan Charles Tuarea Robertson in 1944, lost at sea en route to New Zealand.
