Biographical Notes

Charles William Taylor was born on 5 August 1898 at Winchester South Canterbury, the oldest son of Arthur Edward and Charlotte Jane (née Dawe) Taylor. Charles was not twenty years old when he enlisted on 31 January 1918 at Timaru. A grocer living at home in Temuka, he named his father as next-of-kin. He was serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regimental Territorials. Private C. W. Taylor embarked with the 40th Reinforcements, per the “Tahiti”, departing on 10 July 1918 for Plymouth, England.

Just a week after Charles left, his father died. Mr Taylor who had come to New Zealand as an infant, had been ill for some time. He was survived by his elderly mother, his widow and five children, one daughter having died at the age of eight.

Charles William Taylor, a motor driver, married Gladys Veronice Hobbs on 7 Aprril 1927 at St Peter’s, Temuka, his brother Edward and his sister Myrtle being witnesses.
