Biographical Notes

Joseph Johnson was born on 11 September 1888 [Personnel file] in England, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Pearce. He had come to New Zealand in about 1913. In 1914 he was recorded as a butcher in Timaru, and in 1916 when he was called up. Both parents were deceased when he enlisted, naming a friend in Timaru as next-of-kin. J. Johnson was in the draft of South Canterbury men who left for Trentham on 20 February 1917.
