Biographical Notes

Christopher Buckley was born on 10 December 1896 at Orari, South Canterbury, and baptised Roman Catholic on 3 January 1897 at Geraldine. He was the youngest son of Philip and Margaret (née Norton) Buckley. Philip Buckley was from County Cork, Ireland, while Margaret was from County Limerick. Michael and Hannah Buckley, brother and sister of Philip, also settled in South Canterbury. Christopher and his siblings were most likely educated at Orari South School. His brother Michael Buckley served in World War I and another brother, John Buckley, also enlisted.
