Biographical Notes

John Newrick Meynell was born on 28 October 1892 at Fairlie, the son of Robert and Ann (née Harris) Meynell. He was educated at Hampstead, Papanui, Fendalton, and Oamaru schools, leaving just before his fifteenth birthday to go out to work. He was a labourer for the Waimate County Council when he enlisted. John Meynell left as part of South Canterbury's quota for the 20th Reinforcements by the second express north on 23 August 1916. Prior to leaving the men were entertained at the Stafford Tea Rooms by the Ladies Committee of the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society. The men assembled at the Drill Shed to be addressed by the Mayor and other dignitaries and then to march to the Railway Station, accompanied by the 2nd South Canterbury Band, Senior Cadets and Honorary Territorials. He married Vaughley Comley Joblin in 1933, and they had one daughter. John died in 1951, Vaughley some 31 years later. Both are buried at Tiri Tiro road Cemetery, Levin.
