Biographical Notes

William Thomas Hooke was born on 11 November 1885 at Wellington, the eldest son of William and Ada (née Foden) Hooke, both of whom came from England. The family moved from Wellington to Timaru in 1912. William was station manager for Mr Le Cren of Tekapo Station, Fairlie, when he enlisted. He left as part of South Canterbury's quota for the 20th Reinforcements by the second express north on 23 August 1916. Prior to leaving the men were entertained at the Stafford Tea Rooms by the Ladies Committee of the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society. The men assembled at the Drill Shed to be addressed by the Mayor and other dignitaries and then to march to the Railway Station, accompanied by the 2nd South Canterbury Band, Senior Cadets and Honorary Territorials. William married Nellie Thistlewaite on 5 April 1919 at Stretford, Lancashire, England. Nellie died in 1946 and was buried at Timaru. William died in Victoria, Australia, in 1959. His brother, Arthur Joseph Foden Hooke, also served in World War I, leaving Timaru with William in 1916. Their brother, Charles, was called up in 1918.
