Biographical Notes

David Herd was born on 1 October 1893 at Monimail, Fifeshire, Scotland, the son of Thomas and Catherine (Kate, née Anderson) Herd. David was a scholar at home at Knockhill, St Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1901, with his parents and three younger sisters. He was a farm hand at Willowbridge, South Canterbury, when he enlisted, nominating his father, T. Herd, Willowbridge, as next-of-kin. Casualty List No. 601, published in June 1917, listed Corporal D. Herd among the wounded. His father was then living at Totara Valley.

David and his parents were at Ardgowan near Oamaru with his parents by 1919. Some time after he married Anne Seath Wilkinson, also from Fifeshire. It may be that he returned to Scotland to marry Anne. They had twin sons born in 1923. David Herd died on 15 August 1971 at Oamaru and Anne in 1977.
