Biographical Notes

James Hamilton Paterson was born on 14 December 1894 at Timaru, the youngest son of John and Margaret (née Hamilton) Paterson, both from Scotland. He was educated at various schools in south Canterbury – Hazelburn, Pleasant Point, Temuka and Seadown. While working as a farm hand at Te Manuiri, Waipawa, in 1917, his name was drawn in the ballot and he was called up. On his father’s appeal, he was allowed an extension of time. James did enlist and served in New Zealand for one year and 36 days. He married Jessie Amelia Campbell on 11 June 1919 at Waipawa, Hawke’s Bay. His brother, Albert Victor Patersons, served overseas.
