Biographical Notes

Albert Victor Paterson was born on 1 July 1890 at Hazelburn, South Canterbury, the fourth son of John and Margaret (née Hamilton) Paterson, both from Scotland. He was educated at various schools in South Canterbury – Hazelburn, Pleasant Point, Temuka and Seadown. A. V. Paterson was in quite a large draft of men who went into camp at the beginning of March 1918 as South Canterbury’s quota for the 39th Reinforcements. Before leaving the men were given a brief farewell at the Drill Shed. Albert married Elspeth Jane Ross in 1928. His brother, James Hamilton Patersons, also enlisted for service.
