Biographical Notes

Denis Eugene Murphy was known as Eugene and enlisted thus. He was born on 12 October 1897 at Fairlie, the younger son of Denis and Margaret (née Fitzsimmons) Murphy. He, his brother and three older sisters were educated at Fairlie School. E. Murphy was in quite a large draft of men who went into camp at the beginning of March 1918 as South Canterbury’s quota for the 39th Reinforcements. Before leaving the men were given a brief farewell at the Drill Shed.
