Biographical Notes

Clarence Percy Eriksen was born on 23 May 1893 at Mauriceville, Masterton, the ninth of the twelve children of Norwegian Christopher Eriksen and his second wife, Elise Maria Kirstine Andersen from Denmark. Christopher’s first wife and infant daughter died at sea on their way to New Zealand. Along with his siblings, Clarence, possibly known as Percy, was educated at Mauriceville East and Mauriceville West schools. He enlisted on 26 June 1917 at Timaru. C. P. Erickson was in quite a large draft of men who went into camp at the beginning of March 1918 as South Canterbury’s quota for the 39th Reinforcements. Before leaving the men were given a brief farewell at the Drill Shed. At the time he was a labourer living at Willowbridge via Waimate. Clarence married Ladysmith Esther Bonnett in 1932. He died on 12 May 1972 at Nelson, aged 78 years. He was creamtaed, his ashes being interred at Marsden Valley Cemetery.
