Biographical Notes

(Hubert) Henry and Amelia Ann Darby. His first two months os schooling were at Gleniti School before the family moved into town where he attended Timaru Main School. Arthur's mother died in 1907, aged 33 years, and is buried in the Timaru Cemetery. On enlisting, Arthur gave a birth date of 23 October 1897 and implied that he had turned 20. He was, however, only 17. Did he do this to be eligible to enlist? He named his aunt as next-of-kin – Mrs S. W. Slater, Winchester. His father’s sister, Elizabeth Darby, married Selby Willcot Slater in 1908 at St Mary’s, Timaru. At the time Arthur was a teamster for Mr Slater. His father also served in World War I with the Samoan Relief; he died in 1942 and is buried at Temuka. His older brother, Albert Edward Darby, left in 1917 with the 30th Reinforcements. Arthur died on 6 May 1924, aged 23 years 11 months, and was buried with his mother at Timaru.
