Biographical Notes

Arthur Hodgens was born on 29 October 1886 in Ireland. By 1914 he was residing in South Canterbury. He was among the recruits passed by the medical men in Timaru in mid July 1915. A. Hodgens left for Trentham on 18 October, with South Canterbury’s quota for the Ninth Reinforcements. He returned to New Zealnd by the “Marama” in October 1916. In 1918 Arthur married Elsie Elizabeth Hutchison. Their daughter Mollie served as a nurse in World War II. Arthur died on 6 February 1963 at Auckland, aged 76 years, and was cremated at Purewa. Elsie who died in 1976 was also cremated there.
