Biographical Notes

Frederick Boyce was the third son of Frederick and Mary Elizabeth (née Shears) Boyce, although the first-born son died in infancy. Born on 6 March 1881 at Timaru, Frederick was baptised as Frederick William Thomas Boyce, three weerks later, on 27 March, at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru. Along with his siblings he was educated variously at Timaru South School and Timaru Main School. In late 1893 the family moved to Cheviot where Frederick, senior, died in 1899. Frederick Boyce, junior, had served in the South African War. He enlisted early in the war and nominated his brother, Joseph Henry Boyce, as next-of-kin. He suffered a gunshot wound to his left arm, suffering permanent disability. Having returned home, he married Hilda Thorne in 1916. His brother, Samuel Frederick Boyce, enlisted also.
