Biographical Notes

Lionel John Mander was born on 12 June 1892 at Dunedin, the youngest son of John and Annie Jeffery (née Shaw) Mander. Guy was educated at Fairlie, Broad Bay (Otago), Andersons Bay (Dunedin), Stoke and Central Nelson schools. It was while the family was residing at Fairlie that John Mander, an accountant, died – 26 October 1894 - and was buried in the Fairlie Cemetery. Mrs John Mander provided private lodgings at Fairlie in 1897. Gunner L. J. Mander was Mentioned in Despatches in 1917 and was awarded the Military Medal, as cabled on 4 October 1918. Lionel Mander married Agnes Whiting Seymour in 1928 and thereafter resided in the Wellington area. He died on 29 November 1964, aged 72 years, and was cremated at Karori Crematorium, Wellington, his ashes being interred in the soldiers niche at Karori Cemetery. His brother, Guy Jeffery Mander, also served in World War I, and another brother, Reginald Rex Mander, enlisted. Guy, Lionel and Reginald were nephews of Frederick Shaw who served in World War I.
