Biographical Notes

James Robert Hatton, known as Jim, was born on 18 August 1889 at Timaru, the eldest son of Frederick (Fred) and Jessie (née Walker) Hatton. His birth was registered as James Robert Hatton Parkinson. It appears that his father was born Frederick Parkinson and was adopted by the Hatton family after his mother’s death. For a time he used the name Frederick Hatton Parkinson then simply Frederick Hatton . Six of the children were register Parkinson, two Hatton. He married as Frederick Parkinson and died as Frederick Parkinson Hatton. Along with his siblings Jim was educated at Waimataitai School. James Robert Hatton, an iron and brass moulder, was called up in 1916. On enlistment, he gave his home address and named his mother as next-of kin. James Robert Hatton Parkinson married Myra Knowles in 1925. Jim died on 9 June 1973 at Temuka, aged 83 years and is buried at Temuka, his wife Myra with him. Four Hatton brothers served in World War I, the others being Frederick Henry, Stanley and Gordon. Their youngest brother, Nelson Stuart Hatton lost his life in World War II – 4 September 1942 in Egypt.
