Biographical Notes

Frederick Charles Hunt, who was born on 9 September 1886 at Christchurch, was the second son of James John Hunt and his first wife, Elizabeth Ann née Lancaster. The birth was registered at Timaru, suggesting that his parents were residing in the district. Elizabeth died in 1895, leaving her husband and five young children. While his two sisters lived for some time with an aunt in Christchurch and attended school there, it is not apparent where Frederick and his two brothers were educated. James John Hunt, who married Clara Novella Langford in 1896, lived in South Canterbury – at Hilton and Totara Valley - for many years before moving to Waipara sometime before 1915. Although Frederick gave a Christchurch address, he was farming at Hilton in 1911 and near Geraldine in 1914, possibly going back there on his return to New Zealand. He had leased his farm in order to join the forces. Private Hunt embarked with the 8th Reinforcements on 13 November 1915. Gunner F. C. Hunt was reported wounded in September 1916. In France he had been transferred to the light trench mortar battery, with which he had been engaged in “some hot fighting”. Frederick Hunt “took a great interest in Bible Class and Y.M.C.A. work, and was an active member of the Geraldine, and, later, the Knox Church, Presbyterian Bible classes.” He married Edna May Bailey in 1920, and he and Edna moved to the North Island. They were in Auckland when Frederick’s father died in November 1942. His oldest brother, William James Eugene Hunt, a married man with two children, who was listed in the Reserve Rolls in 1917, died in 1918; and his younger brother, Albert Ernest Hunt, also served in World War I. Frederick and Alfred sent wreaths when William’s widow died in 1930 in Christchurch, as did their father and step-mother.
