Biographical Notes

Gordon Lindsay Tweedie was the second son of Matthew and Annie (née Witting) Tweedie. He was educated at Riverton School and Southland Boys’ High School, Invercargill. He was a clerk with the National Bank. Wounded on 28 September 1916, Corporal Tweedie was admitted to hospital, and was later transferred to the convalescent hospital at Hornchurch. Gordon L. Tweedie, 8/3423, arrived back in New Zealand in May 1917, part of a large contingent of 529 invalids and others. The invalids included 105 who belonged to Canterbury units or had next-of-kin in Canterbury. He reached Timaru on 14 May by the express bringing a group of invalided soldiers. He was suffering from TB of the lung and was assessed as 70% disability. Gordon Tweedie died on 12 April 1922 at his parents’ residence in Christchurch, but of the Cashmere Sanatorium, aged just 28 years.
