Mary died in February 1897, when young James was only 2½ years old. He had two older sisters, Margaret Alice marrying William Arras in 1913. His sister, Mrs W. Arras, received advice that her brother, Private J. J. Harmer, would return to New Zealand invalided, by hospital ship, reaching Lyttelton in early 1918. He had been wounded in the right arm on 12 Octobber 1917. James married Margaret Catherine Hutt in 1922.
